THE BLACK COUNTRY ACCORDION CLUB. NOVEMBER 23RD. FISH & CHIPS, FROLICS AND FUN WITH HARRY HUSSEY.
This was to be the theme for our November club night and Harry Hussey was to be the entertainer. A good turnout was expected with the promise of a delicious meal of battered fish and chips and that was exactly what happened. By the way, we knew that Harry Hussey would something to do with the expected turnout.
So, the expected flow of hungry fans began to arrive, some armed with various utensils, condiments and little boxes containing bread and butter, the odd bottle of wine was also detected. Our guest artist was in a jovial mood, even after his mammoth journey from the north, and he was very quickly into his routine. I called him ‘Happy Harry’ because he rapidly raised smiles and laughter from everyone present. Having heard Harry play many times before we assumed that he would begin playing with requests from the audience but he had other ideas and played a selection of very old sing along tunes that were popular when he was a little boy. With a silly smirk on his face he soon had everyone laughing with him. The requests followed and he responded with interesting and amusing comments. The evening delicacy arrived and we all tucked in to the battered chips with relish.
After the interval Ray Izod played a selection of tunes and we noticed that he now enjoys playing continental tunes. Harry then joined him on stage and they played a pleasant selection together. The evening ended with the usual jazz session. We were very pleased with the turnout with many new faces appearing and everyone was delighted with the evening. Harry had arrived in a happy frame of mind and we all felt that the concert was excellent as he was very amusing with his comments.
The social nights are going from strength to strength and attracting new faces each meeting. Everyone is given the opportunity to play their favourite tunes and information and sheet music is always changing hands. At the moment we meet on three Mondays each month. First Monday is the Social night, third Monday is for band practice and the Fourth Monday is our Club or Guest night. Support for the Band practice sometimes varies but at the moment general support is looking promising. Barry is pleased with the progress that the band is making and feels that the future is looking good.
