The Black Country Accordion Club February 25th 2013

Worries over the damp cold miserable weather together with the threats of more snow soon disappeared with the arrival of the FETTLERS at the club. Michael and Jonty are the members of this comedy folk duo who specialise in music and Lancashire comedy. After the success of the January club birthday celebrations we expected a slight recession in support and we were disappointed with a slight drop in numbers. We decided that this was due to the fact that some of our more wealthy members take a sunshine break and also that we have to face the inevitable that we are all getting that much older and sometimes the fireside comforts are more attractive than a trip out into the elements. Even under these circumstances the turnout was still OK.

Brian Dyson, alias Harry Floyd, retired ex dance band accordionist, opened the evenings’ entertainment with a selection of popular tunes. Brian has been out of action for quite a time and made a welcome return to playing.

Michael, with his accordion and Jonty, with his guitar, calling themselves ‘The Fettlers’, began their performance. Michael started with lively tunes including Killy Beggs and Happy Hours. Together they sang the Manchester Rambler. These guys really are a comedy duo and know how to entertain with a varied selection of tunes and songs interspersed with Liverpudlian jokes and humour. We found it very easy to join in with the songs as they had such a large selection of popular tunes in their programme. The lyrics of the ‘Knocker-up Man’ and the ‘Black-Pud Stud’ certainly raised a laugh.  Michael’s solos ranged from the ‘Cuckoo Waltz’ to ‘The Beer Barrel Polka’. A very pleasant evening and I’m sure that they will be invited back again.

The social night, held on the First Monday each month, is now becoming very popular with new faces often appearing. Our new web site is now beginning to attract some interest so please make a note of the address…
