NOVEMBER 28TH. FISH & CHIPS SUPPER

AT    THE BLACK COUNTRY ACCORDION CLUB

This club night was to be extra special as it was received with lots of enthusiasm from members and friends alike. A double bill was arranged with a selection of entertainers booked for the night. However, the mysterious virus which was attacking most of the Black Country did strike down two of our supporting artists but the star of the show, our favourite jazz man, Harry Hussey, accompanied by the lovely Pat, arrived on time armed with a box of tissues to help him cope with his cold. The other entertainer on the bill was a local man known as Ron Popple, a member of the Magic Circle and also a Black Country comedian. Ron’s humour was similar to the late Tommy Cooper and was just as hilarious. Ron called his act, Comedy Magic and was a huge success with our audience.

Harry began the show with his usual enthusiasm and soon began asking for requests which he promptly played. I enjoy the way he plays his version of a tune and adds comedy to his playing which always gets a response from everyone.  At 8.30 , as arranged, the food arrived and the response to the aroma of fried fish and chips was instant with the food being passed down the aisles. The canteen was busy with the tea and coffee and very soon all that was left was the aroma of the meal.  Raffle and Tote were soon drawn, paving the way for the magician to take over. Ron is a real pro and informed me that he is normally booked for concerts and shows as a warm-up man for the main act. He was very impressed with our club and Harry’s playing and very quickly had everyone laughing and applauding his tricks,  non stop jokes and comments.

Harry wound the night up with more requests and the audience departed in a very happy mood.  What we had attempted was to put on was an attractive variety night of entertainment and it worked. The weather was very cold and off putting but it did not affect the turnout, numbers were down by 5% due to illness.
