MONDAY OCTOBER 26TH. AT THE BLACK COUNTRY ACCORDION CLUB
This was hopefully to be the last club night which would be affected by the holiday syndrome. Alas this was not to be, even though the attraction was a concert by the ever popular SHEILA FAWKES QUINTET. Sheila and her boys have been regular visitors at the club over the past few years. Sadly, numbers were further depleted by health problems amongst our more elderly members.
Sheila and the Band gave their usual performance of a mixture of popular music and songs with Sheila entertaining with her chit chat and jokes. Terry McGrath was in his usual superb form playing his selection of instruments including the trombone and clarinet.
The social nights have continued to be a success with a really excellent turnout even though a number of regulars were absent from the October meeting. This is very pleasing but seems to be creating an impression that popularity between club nights, with guest artists, and social nights with a mixture of players and casual visitors, seems to be leaning towards social nights. We must not complain about this as social nights are much less demanding on the committee as there is much less preparation involved.
An important factor regarding club nights, is that we need to provide a variety of entertainers or bands as it is important to continue to attract new faces to the club. There is an abundance of entertainers available but the travelling expenses are becoming a problem for everyone concerned. We are pleased that we have had a number of new accordion enthusiasts join the club but also, sadly a number of elderly members have drifted away for various reasons. Looking on the bright side, the forthcoming Accordion Festival will boost the club attendances.
The club Accordion Band has faltered a little and as usual the problem lies with holidays but this will shortly be returning to normal. Barry has great plans for this band and another public performance is planned for the new year. New members will be very welcome.
The AGM is next on the agenda and a good turnout is expected as we have several ideas in the offing.
