MONDAY MAY 27TH.

LOU AMBROSE…CLUB NIGHT

THE SHOW MUST GO ON, AND IT DID, AND IN STYLE.  DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING THE GUEST ARTIST BOOKED FOR THE EVENINGS’ SHOW DID NOT MATERIALIZE. MEMBERS AND GUESTS ARRIVED EARLY AND THE ROOM BEGAN TO FILL VERY QUICKLY. BARRY WAS WORKING AWAY ON THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT LEAVING ME IN COMMAND. I BEGAN TO FEEL RATHER UNEASY AS THE CLOCK TICKED AWAY THE MINUTES LEAVING VERY LITTLE TIME FOR SETTING UP ETC. AND A HURRIED PHONE CALL OR TWO REVEALED THE SENARIO THAT PEOPLE IN MY SITUATION FEARED. THIS WAS EVEN WORSE THAN A MID WINTER, MID CONCERT POWERCUT THAT I HAD ONCE EXPERIENCED. TO ADD TO MY WOES THERE WERE SEVERAL NEW GUESTS AMONGST THE AUDIENCE WHO HAD ACCEPTED INVITATIONS FROM PROUD MEMBERS, TO COME TO OUR ALL SINGING AND SWINGING ACCORDION AND MUSIC CLUB. I APPEALED TO OUR FAITHFUL MEMBERS TO SEARCH FOR AN ACCORDION OR TWO IN ORDER TO GET SOMETHING GOING FOR THE RESTLESS THRONG, SITTING AND LOOKING AT THE EMPTY STAGE. RELIEF, A RATHER HURRIED CONFERENCE PRODUCED THREE INSTRUMENTS AND ONE MEMBER DASHED BACK HOME TO COLLECT HER ACCORDION AND MUSIC. ARMED WITH THIS MIRACLE AND MY JOKE BOOK I FACED THE GRIM FACED AUDIENCE. I’M IN CHARGE TONIGHT I INFORMED THEM AND DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYONG MY CONTROL WE DO NOT HAVE A GUEST ARTIST. THEY ALL LAUGHTED, THEY ASSUMED THAT IT WAS ONE OF MY JOKES.  ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE THEIR ENTRANCE, RAFFLE AND TOTE MONEY BACK ARE WELCOME TO CLAIM IT, I INFORMED THEM.  MORE LAUGHS AND APPLAUSE FOLLOWED.  I THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE TAKING IT VERY WELL INDEED. I REALLY MUST GIVE CREDIT TO EVERYONE PRESENT BECAUSE THEY ALL RALLIED TO THE CALL, MEMBERS AND AUDIENCE ALIKE AS WE PUT ON A RATHER HURRIED AND MAKESHIFT SHOW.  I BEGAN WITH A FEW OF MY HILARIOUS JOKES AND HARRY FLOYD THEN PLAYED A SELECTION OF TUNES IN HIS OWN SPECIAL STYLE.  JOHN MASON, BUSKER AND CHARITY FUND RAISER PLAYED US THROUGH TO THE INTERVAL. JOHN PLAYED HIS MAGIECA ACCORDION WHICH IS ALWAYS RECEIVED VERY WELL BY THE AUDIENCE. YVONNE AND DAUGHTER, SONIA PARKES RETURNED FROM THEIR HOMEWARD DASH TO COLLECT THEIR INSTRUMENTS, IN TIME TO TEAM UP WITH JOHN SHELLEY, WHO BORROWED HARRY FLOYDS’ ACCORDION AND THIS PLEASANT SOUNDING TRIO BEGAN THE SECOND HALF PERFORMANCE. TREVOR TAYLOR, WHO JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE HIS BEAUTIFUL SOUNDING DELAPPE ACCORDION IN THE BOOT OF HIS CAR, PLAYED A SELECTION OF HIS FAVOURITES AND THEN HARRY FLOYD MADE HIS SECOND APPEARANCE ON STAGE. HARRY PLAYED IN A DANCE BAND AT THE TOWER BALLROOM A FEW YEARS AGO.  JOHN MASON FINISHED THE EVENING WITH A VERY LIVELY SELECTION OF HAND CLAPPING AND SING-ALONG TUNES, INCLUDING THE EVER POPULAR ‘YMCA’ WHICH ALWAYS GETS A GOOD REPONSE. AT THE END OF A VERY ENTERTAINING EVENING, I THANKED A VERY OBLIGING AND CONSIDERATE AUDIENCE AND CLUB MEMBERS. NOT ONE PERSON ACCEPTED THE OFFER OF A REFUND ALTHOUGH THEY ALL ACCEPTED THE OFFER OF FREE TEA AND BISCUITS.  AS A GESTURE TO THE NEW VISITORS AND ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE FELT A LITTLE ‘MIFFED’, HALF PRICE ADMISSION FOR  NEXT MONTH’S SHOW WITH PEARL ADRIANO WAS OFFERED.  THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WE HAD MADE A HEALTHY PROFIT, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NOT A FEE TO PAY TO A GUEST ARTIST MEANT THAT WE COULD MAKE A GENEROUS DONATION TO OUR FAVOURITE CHARITY, ‘STARLIGHT’, MET WITH APPLAUSE AND CHEERS.
